When Antonio and his partner Ava (not their real names) discovered they were pregnant, shock soon turned to dismay.
Antonio was navigating a difficult job change after having been out of work all summer. Amidst the uncertainty, he didn’t feel confident he could adequately provide for Ava and for a child too.
Antonio remembers the difficulty of that moment: “When we found out that she was pregnant, we just had a lot on our plates.”
The more Antonio focused on his worries, the more he felt certain abortion was the only path forward.
That’s when Ava thought she called an abortion clinic to make an appointment. Instead, she reached a place of hope!
Sensing the desperation in Ava’s voice, the operator encouraged Ava to make an appointment to speak with a patient advocate in person about her pregnancy, her fears and her options.
At their in-person appointment, Antonio and Ava found real hope during their conversation with the patient advocate. The couple was reassured that abortion wasn’t the only path forward. After Ava was given a no-cost pregnancy test and an ultrasound and the couple was given counseling, Antonio left feeling confident that he really could parent and provide for their child.
A week later, however, doubts, worries and financial woes began pressing in on Antonio again. He urged Ava to move forward with an abortion.
While Ava and Antonio waited anxiously in the abortion clinic lobby, his thoughts raced: “How can I put Ava through this?” That’s when Antonio quickly grasped Ava’s hand and led her outside, saying, “Listen, we can’t do this. I’m here for you, whatever you need. We’re in this together.”
As Antonio reflects on that turning point moment, he now knows . . .
“I can tell you, if I didn’t receive counseling at the pregnancy center, I wouldn’t have gotten Ava out of there. But I knew we would have the help and support we’d need.”
